Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati on Thursday criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly creating law and order problems in Greater Noida, which the latter visited to lend support to agitating farmers.
Addressing journalists here on Thursday, Mayawati said: “It is all due to the electoral battle next year.”
“Instead of creating problems in Uttar Pradesh, Yuvaraj (Rahul Gandhi) should fight within his house (Congress) for farmers’ rights.”
“Nobody is listening to him in his house, so he came to Bhatta to express his anger.”
Laying stress on maintaining law and order, Mayawati said the Congress “drama” on farmers’ issue would not be
tolerated.
Referring to Gandhi’s preventive custody late Wednesday night, she said even the high and mighty would not be spared if they tried to disturb peace in the state.
Mayawati said opposition parties should pressure the Congress to bring in the long-pending bill on land acquisition. She said the Congress was unwilling to enact the law to protect the interests of farmers.
Mayawati said instead of fighting for the cause of farmers in the Lok Sabha, the opposition had turned Uttar Pradesh into “sansad”, though the state had nothing to do with the land acquisition law.

The land was acquired in 2009 and compensation in accordance with the agreement had been paid, she added.
She accused opposition parties of arranging funds to purchase illegal weapons for farmers in the village to disrupt peace.
She also rebutted the charge that the Bahujan Samaj Party was in league with the Congress.
