MUCH AWAITED construction of Second Water Works in the city with an estimated cost of Rs 30 crore is all set to begin at Karelabagh here.

The Urban Development and Housing Minister Azam Khan will lay the foundation stone for the project at a function to be organised at Karelabagh pump station on Tuesday evening.

Notably, the state government had approved an amount of Rs 30 crore for the purpose in May last year.

It may be recalled that various parts of the city are reeling under drinking water crisis for near a decade because of the rise in population owing to heavy influx of people from villages to cities.

Sources said the city had a population of about three lakhs 40 years ago; today it has a population of over 20 lakhs.

However, the water supply system has not been improved. There is only one waterworks in city and two of the four underground tanks at Khusrobagh are not operational.

During summer the drinking water crisis aggravates thereby adding to the woes of common people.

The city has about 100 tubewells and mini-tubewells to cater to the needs of citzens but the ever-increasing populations has set all government efforts at naught.
