The cardiology department of the Jammu Government Medical College organised a day-long workshop on complex cardio vascular interventions in association with Dr. Raj Dave from US on Tuesday.
This is the fifth workshop of its kind being conducted by the department and is an attempt to keep abreast with latest international trends in cardiology.
Talking to reporters, Sushil Sharma, head of cardiology department said, "The department is providing latest facility whether in coronary interventions, cardiac pacing and latest echocardiography and heart command at the doorsteps of the patients in the region. The workshop organised by the department saw Raj Dave, chief medical executive from the Holy Spirit Cardiovascular Institute, Pennsylvania, as the chief guest."
"Dave is an expert in cardiovascular intervention procedures. He guided us during three procedures and displayed his expertise in the field," he added. Dave said similar workshops would be held on a regular basis.
"We can do excellent research work in Jammu. New technology can be tried on the patients suffering from cardio vascular diseases. We will train the physicians and also give them technical know how regarding the use of latest cardiology equipments."
Commenting on the rise in number of cardiology-related diseases, Dave said, "The rise in heart diseases is due to a variety of reasons including genetic, lifestyle changes and lack of physical activity."
"The diseases can be controlled by avoiding smoking and drinking, regular physical workouts and going for regular health checkups after the age of 40," he added.
