Workshop to firm up strategies to combat child labour begins

Aarambh has designed the workshop in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services (CRS), MP. Participants representing voluntary organisations working in field from Ujjain, Khandwa, Dewas, Indore, Jhabua and Satna are attending the two-day
workshop. Area specific situations/issues related to the problems are being discussed at the workshop.

State representative of CRS Kishor Patnaik was present as the chief guest of inaugural session while Rajeev of CRS, Indore, was the special guest.

Both the guests urged the participants to discuss the problems in their respective areas freely and implement the strategies learnt in workshop in the field. Archana Sahay of Aarambh introduced the objectives of the organisation.

While discussing the area-specific problems, the participants mentioned that in Ujjain, child labour is mainly engaged in incense stick making, in Jhabua and Satna they work as agriculture labourers and are often turned into bonded labourers if their parents are unable to repay debts. Problem of child trafficking is raising head. In Khandwa, children are working in unorganised sector while in Bhopal child labour could be found in almost all sectors.

Chief functionary of Yagna Communications and well-known lawyer Sadhna Pathak spoke on rehabilitation of the victims. At the end of first day, the participants were taken for a field visit to SOS Children’s Village.
