According to school authorities the presence of vermin in the luncheon packets was first noticed by a Class IV student who brought it to a teacher’s attention. Upon examining other packets the teachers discovered that vegetables in many of the meal packets were crawling with live worms.

The school authorities then forbade the students from eating the meal and fed these to stray animals. They are also learnt to have lodged a complaint with the Education department of the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC).

This is the third complaint of sub-standard or rotten food being dished out by the NGO to primary school students in less than a month. Reports of rotten food were received from the primary school at Sindhi Colony on August 15 and from Nemi Nagar less than a fortnight ago.

“I personally tested the samples and the food quality was excellent,” stressed Sarda. Mayor-in-Council member in-charge of Education Devkrishna Sankhla had a different take.

“False reports about the quality of the food are spread by vested interests in certain schools. The management of these schools wants the cooking of meals to be handed over to them so that they can line their pockets with the mid-day meal funds,” charged the MiC member.
