CPM leader Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s intervention to resolve the problems raised by postal employees who have threatened to go on a nationwide strike.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Yechury described as "very reasonable" the demands of the postal employees as "very reasonable," including the establishment of a judicial commission for gramin dak sevaks (GDS). According to him, the government’s proposal to form a committee which will be chaired by a retired GDS officer was a "clear violation of the agreement reached during the 1993 postal strike."
The postal employees also want recognition for the National Federation of Postal Employees and reversal of the decision to transfer certain post offices in urban areas to private players. "This is the beginning of privatisation of postal services in the country," he warned.
