Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and some of his cabinet colleagues conducted a 'padayatra' here today to raise funds for flood relief in the state.
Yeddyurappa, Bangalore South MP H N Ananth Kumar and several ministers, including V S Acharya, Shobha Karandlaje and Katta Subramanya Naidu, were among those who participated in the initiative.
The padayatra started from the State Bank of Mysore circle in the heart of the city and passed through areas such as Avenue road, Chikpet and Balepet.
"I am overwhelmed by the solidarity of the people in tackling the situation," Yeddyurappa said.
"The state government has been taking measures for rescue, relief and rehabilitation of the victims on a war-footing. Yet the volume of the help needed is a huge. In this hour of need, I solicit help from all corners as the government alone cannot handle this kind of calamity," he said.
The Chief Minister said about three lakh houses have either been collapsed or damaged in the rains and flash floods and appealed to every individual, voluntary organisation, corporate body and philanthropist to donate liberally.
A Congress team, led by KPCC President R V Deshpande, also undertook a separate padayatra here to raise funds.
