A youth accused of raping and then killing a nine-year-old has been handed down life imprisonment by a Delhi sessions court on Monday.

Terming the act as "barbaric", Rajendra Prasad, Additonal Sessions Judge, said that the act was gruesome and there was no scope of showing mercy towards Kailash Chand.

A fine of Rs 45,000 was also slapped on Chand after the case under section 302 (murder) and section 376 (rape) of the IPC was found established.
On June 18, 2002, the victim, a student of class five had gone out of her Karkari mode residence in east Delhi.
Her father Raju informed the police when she failed to show up by 8 pm.
Her body was found next morning. Reports confirmed that she had been killed after being raped.
