CHIEF MINISTER Mulayam Singh Yadav today announced to double the unemployment allowance from Rs 500 to Rs 1000 if Samajwadi Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal alliance was voted back to power in the next assembly election.

Yadav said youths could play a vital role in the victory of his party. This makes the “cash-for-vote” scheme, as the Opposition has dubbed it, an effective electoral plank for the ruling alliance to ward off anti-incumbency.

Starting the distribution of Rs 500 unemployment allowance per month from Lucknow division, the chief minister interestingly chose to hand over the first cheque of Rs 1000 (April-May) to Arti Devi from Rae Bareli.

Eight girls from Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli parliamentary constituency were first called on the dais at the sprawling Ambedkar grounds here to receive the money. Around 52000 unemployed youths received the allowance.

The chief minister called upon the youths to take pledge to fight against social evils and corruption. He said there was all-round attack on the SP and only youths could counter the joint opposition’s offensive.
