Mithun Joshi, the sports physio who has been assisting the Punjab left-hander in his rehabilitation, said in his report to the BCCI: “Yuvraj is in the final phase of his rehabilitation. He has been doing light fielding, functional agility and netting.

“I expect him to return to light Twenty20 match-style play on January 19 and hope that he would be able to participate in the Indian team’s preparation for the One-day series against the West Indies,” he said. “Where the actual series is concerned, I hope he is able to play at least the latter part of that series or the Sri Lanka series.”

Yuvraj said from Mumbai on Tuesday: “It was never a question of pain. It was bone bruising because of the ligament tear. Obviously, there is discomfort in using crutches and wearing a brace, but it was not about pain.”

Yuvraj said it was hard to come back so quickly without surgery. “The problem is that it plays on you mentally, especially when fielding. You wonder whether the injury will recur.”
