The administration informed them about the directives of the commission and the zila panchayat chairperson’s election process.

There are four contenders in the fray.

District magistrate Dr Hariom directed the candidates to submit details of their daily expenditure to the district administration. He directed subordinate officials to strictly implement the code of conduct for the election.

Deputy returning officer for ZP chairperson election NN Lal asked panchayat members about their security and allowed two gunners for each member. He directed the members to inform the district administration regarding any threat to them and reiterated that the commission was determined to conduct a free and fair election.

Of the 60-member zila panchayat, only two dozen newly elected members were present in the meeting. Newly elected members reached the district magistrate’s Conference Hall in different groups. The absence of the most of the members had increased the worries of the contenders for the post.

On the other hand, joint opposition front candidate Yashoda Devi claimed that most of the members had assured their support to her.

District officials said participation of newly elected members was not mandatory and members would get identity cards before casting the vote. Therefore, most of the members were absent from the meeting.

The voting will be held on January 7 at the district Collectorate Hall. The counting of votes will be held at the same place. A clear picture will emerge on Tuesday, which is the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers.
