The National Students’ Union of India’s victory is seen as a setback to the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is barely a week away from celebrating its first year in office.

The result is also significant since the BJP is still celebrating its success in the urban local body polls where it won 40 out of the 46 local bodies.

NSUI’s Anil Chopra, got 3,904 votes, defeating his nearest rival from the BJP-affiliate Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Shankar Lal Gora, by a margin of 727 votes.

Other winners, included Anil Chauhan (vice-president), Vijaydeep Singh Tamadiya (general secretary) and Surbhi Meena (joint secretary), giving the Congress youth party a rare complete panel in Rajasthan University students’ union.

The result, which was almost scrapped, could see the light of the day only after the double bench of high court directed the varsity to declare it.

Earlier, a single bench of the Rajasthan high court had ruled the elections illegal citing violation of the election code of conduct and Lyngdoh committee recommendations.
