Geetam Singh, the 27-year-old driver had fled the scene after the accident. The police contacted the owner of the truck and obtained the driver’s mobile number. “After tracing the mobile number, we apprehended him the same day in Transport Nagar. He was arrested on Wednesday morning,” said Kamal Nayan, SHO Accident.

The driver, who is a resident of Agra, told the police that he thought that the car had crossed when it overturned. The police, however, are incredulous about his version of events.

A case has been lodged against Singh for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He was presented in court from where he was sent to one-day police custody.

The car was discovered from under the truck two hours after the accident on Tuesday. It took the police several hours to rescue the bodies from underneath the truck with the help of a crane and other equipment.

The five passengers were from two families from Malaviya Nagar and Surajpol area of the city.

The police said that the car was being driven by Rahul Sharma (22) who was travelling with his fiancé Roshni Sharma (21), her sister Jyoti Sharma (33) and cousins Avantika (18) and Nitesh Sharma (20). Both Rahul and Roshni got engaged on February this year and their wedding was supposed to take place in November.
