A pair of female and male tigers from the Ranthambore sanctuary will be shifted to Sariska in an Indian Air force (IAF) helicopter under the Tiger re-introduction project on Saturday. The project will be the first of its kind in the country.
Experts from the Rajasthan Forest Department, Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehra Dun, Ministry of Defence, the World Wide Fund for Nature, Ministry of Environment and Forests, and the National Tigers Conservation Authority (NTCA) have inspected the sites in the two sanctuaries and found them suitable. Interestingly, tigers from Ranthambore and Sariska have identical genetic stock.
Top officials including Chief Wildlife Warden RN Mehrotra, Director of WII, Dehra Dun, P.R. Sinha and Rajpal Singh Shekhawat, member empowered committee on wildlife, flew in an IAF chopper in the morning and inspected the sites at Aanapura (Ranthambore) and Nayapani (Sariska).
“Two helipads have been constructed for landing of helicopter to transport the tigers. A team of experts today inspected the take-off point at Ranthambore and landing site at Sariska which were found in order,” Mehrotra said.
“The state government had constituted an experts committee headed by VP Singh to formulate a plan to re-locate the tigers at Sariska and has sent it to the government of India which approved an amount of Rs 1.55 crore.” “If the weather remains favourable, we will execute our plan,” Mehrotra said.
