A gang of unidentified armed men made off with two rifles after they raided a police outpost in Raghunathpur in South Parganas district here on Thursday, police said.
The incident occurred at around 3 AM this morning when the gang of masked miscreants raided the outpost and decamped with two rifles after threatening the two constables on duty, said DIG (Presidency Range), S N Gupta.
To a query on the involvement of Maoists in the incident, Gupta said, "It can be anything, but right now I am not in a position to make a statement. Senior officers have rushed to the spot and after they submit a report things will be clear."
The incident has come as a surprise to many police officers as the locality is not considered a Maoist stronghold, police said.
