Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda today described Marxist patriarch Jyoti Basu's demise as a national loss which will have an impact on the country's political scene.

"Jyoti Basu's death has caused a vacuum in the country's politics. His death is a national loss," Deve Gowda told reporters at the airport.

He was on his way to the Assembly to pay homage to the late veteran leader.

Telugu Desam President and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu said Basu's death was a great loss.

Estranged Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh also arrived here to pay last respect to Basu.
