The fire, fanned by strong winds, was raging on the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th floor of Nandaram market, which was beyond the reach of water canons procured from the army and air force.

The fire fighters said water scarcity was still posing a major problem with its relay supply failing at times.

They said an explosion in the generator room on the 12th floor of the building was feared, as huge quantity of diesel was stored there.

"We are trying our best to ensure that the fire did not reach the stocked diesel in the generator room", they said.

With shades of the tarpauline patty in nearby Kashiram market collapsing last night, fire fighters feared that more could take place.
