After maintaining silence since the Burdwan blast that exposed the widening network of Bangladeshi terror elements in the state, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee held the Centre responsible for the increased infiltration.

“Infiltration is a central subject. The borders are guarded by BSF, SSB and central intelligence people. It is not our responsibility. Infiltration, cross-border smuggling of gold and other items are not the responsibility of the state,” said Mamata on Friday.

She also praised the role of the state police, claiming they did a commendable job by acting fast in the Burdwan blast and slapping UA (P)A against the accused promptly.

“If there’s infiltration, why aren’t you (the centre) taking action,” she said, pointing out the border is unfenced in most areas.

The subject of infiltration has been the fodder of a running battle between the CM and PM Narendra Modi when he was in Bengal to campaign during the Lok Sabha polls.

Despite the opposition criticising the state agencies for poor investigation, Mamata stuck out her neck to praise her police officers.

SLR cartridges recovered in Hooghly

Police recovered 49 rounds of live cartridges, possibly belonging to self-loading rifles (SLRs), from Jangipara in Hooghly district on Friday bringing the district in the ambit of the Burdwan blast probe.

“These are 7.62 mm cartridges but they do not match what the police use here,” a police officer said.
