The Congress Legislature Party in West Bengal on Thursday called for convening of an emergency session of the Assembly to discuss what it termed the "non-existent" law and order and collapse of the police and administration.
"We want that Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee hold a cabinet meeting immediately to take a decision to convene an emergency session of the House and subsequently write to Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi to do so," CLP leader Manas Bhunia and CLP chief whip Asit Mal told a press conference in Kolkata.
"We want to know what the stand of the government is to deal with the Maoists and tackle the law and order situation as also what the state government had discussed with the Centre recently to combat the threat from the Maoists," they said.
Bhunia, who represents Sabong in West Midnapore district said, "It is surprising that there is no statement as yet from the chief minister on the situation arising out of the killing of the two police officers and the abduction of the officer-in-charge of Sankrail police station in the district on October 20."
Bhunia said the government should also make its stand known on his party's demand for the seizure of "illegal and sophisticated firearms" possessed by Marxist cadre in Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore districts.
