“We have arrested Chandan Mullick (28), the maternal uncle of the child’s father. He has been charged with raping the 18-month old girl,” said officer in charge of Park Street police station, Kalimuddin. “It was a special case since the victim was an infant,” he added.

In this case, cops zeroed in on the culprit by the process of elimination. Over the course of their investigations, cops found that despite all the hue and cry over the disappearance of the baby, only one person remained sleeping while all the others woke up as soon as the mother raised the alarm.

The police picked up 10 people on the night of the incident, including Chandan Mullick. At the time, the child’s father, Lebu Mullick, had raised objections, convinced that Chandan would never do such a thing. However, Chandan never resisted to the police picking him up for interrogation. All these factors added to the investigator’s suspicions.

A six-foot wall separates the two compounds, and there is an elevated platform beside a tree at number 27, onto which Chandan dropped the baby and went back to the footpath where he used to sleep. He then pretended to be asleep and the police had to wake him up.

Medical examinations revealed that the girl had been raped. They also found cut marks on the child’s body, which were caused when Chandan, who had a broken tooth with a sharp edge, bit her.
