HC forms committee to monitor, reduce traffic snarls

A division bench comprising Justices P C Ghosh and Soumen Sen directed that under the chairmanship of government pleader Ashok Banerjee, an eight member team would study the situation and submit a report by the second week after the Durga Puja vacation.

Environmentalist Subhas Dutta moved a PIL seeking steps to stop the traffic congestion in these areas apart from places in adjoining Howrah city across the river Hooghly.

Dutta mentioned eight arterial roads in the central district of Kolkata which cause severe traffic snarls owing to big shops dumping their goods on pavements as also by hawkers forcing pedestrians to walk on the roads that are meant for vehicles.

The roads are Brabourne Road, Kalakar Street, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Netaji Subhas Road, portion of Strand Road, K K Thakur Street, College Street and parts of C R Avenue.
