Trinamool Congress chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has begun changing the colour of railway buildings from red to green that symbolises youth and, of course, her party.
Although there has been no formal announcement, five stations in Hooghly district of Bengal have donned different shades of green during the past two weeks. The Railways have more than 7,000 stations in the country.
Singur, a milestone in the anti-Left movement led by Banerjee and the aborted site for the Tatas’ Nano project has been declared a model station. And it boasts of a green exterior.
Singur station manager Basudeb Chatterjee said, “What’s the harm in changing the colour, especially when green symbolises youth?”
The other stations that turned green are Diyara, Nasibpur, Kamarkundu and Bhadreswar.
“Red is not only our colour. It has been the colour on railway buildings since the service began,” said Anil Bose, former CPI(M) member of Parliament and a member of the standing committee on railways.
