A 40-year-old mother of five was allegedly raped and killed on Sunday afternoon at Rajarampur-Dangapara village under Murshidabad’s Lalgola police station. Soon after this incident, the locals nabbed a person who was reportedly roaming about suspiciously in the area and lynched him for his alleged involvement in the rape and murder. The police are yet to disclose the identity of the man who was lynched.

Sources said that around 2pm, the woman, a homemaker, went to the ghat of the Ganga near her house to take a dip. When she didn’t return home, worried family members started looking for her. At that time, they found a stranger emerging from the ghat in wet clothes.

A villager said that no one had seen this person here previously. When they asked him his identity, he reportedly started running. But other villagers nabbed him at another crossing of the village.

Later, the villagers reportedly tied him to a tree and delivered their version of street justice. The stranger was beaten up brutally as the villagers grilled him on the whereabouts of the missing homemaker. Caving under pressure, the stranger reportedly confessed that he had killed the victim after raping her and that the body is still at the ghat of the Ganga. Later, the locals reportedly recovered the body from the spot mentioned by the accused.

Lalgola police personnel rescued the stranger in an unconscious state and rushed him to nearby Kanapukur hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival there.

A senior officer of district police said that they have started an investigation into the two murders. Preliminary inquiries have yielded some important clues which hint that some close relatives of the woman might be involved in her murder.

SDPO (Lalbagh) Azhar A Tausif said, “We aren’t sure yet whether the woman was raped before she was killed. The autopsy will be conducted on Monday. We have come to know the identity of the man who was lynched. We have informed his family. Until they reach here, we will not reveal his identity to the media.”
