Poet Mandakranta Sen has dispatched an account payee cheque to Sahitya Akademi authorities on Tuesday to return the prize money that was given to her in 2004.
The 33-year old poet sent by post the cheque for Rs 50,000 to the secretary of Sahitya Academy. She got the Sahitya Academy Young Writers special award for her poetry.
Over the past few days she wrote more than one letter to the academy asking for the bank account number of the body so that she could return the money. A number of writers across the country have returned their awards after the acts of intolerance in the past few weeks.
On October 14, Sen announced that she was returning the award to protest against the growing intolerance in the country.
“I have repeatedly requested you since October 15 to provide me with your bank account no. so that I can return my prize money to you. But I received no reply from your end till date. So, I am sending an account payee cheque bearing no 60950 of SBI Prince Anwar Shah Road Branch, Kolkata dt 03.11.2015 of Rs 50.000 (Rs, Fifty Thousand ) only in favour of Secretary, Sahitya Akademi,” Sen wrote in the covering letter.
“This is my mark of protest against what happened in Dadri and the attacks on writers and rationalists in other parts of the country,” Sen earlier said. Even after Sahitya Akademy condemned the attack on the writers and appealed to the writers to take back their prizes, Sen was firm on her decision.
