Probe uncontested seats, urges CPM

The CPI(M) on Sunday demanded an immediate scrutiny of the seats in the panchayat polls in Bengal where the ruling party, Trinamool Congress, has been elected unopposed. The party is trying to find out the reasons why there was no contest in those seats.

Claiming that the opposition parties could not nominate candidates in many seats in the face of continuous violence by Trinamool-backed goons, the CPI(M) state secretary in West Bengal, Rabin Deb, claimed that the incidents of violence have continued in the nomination and post-nomination phases because of the absence of the desired number of security forces.

“Had the state government made arrangements for the deployment of security personnel as demanded by the state election commission, the opposition parties, especially the Left Front, could have fielded more candidates. We have recorded every instance of violence and informed the state election commission,” Deb told reporters here on Sunday.

Deb also alleged that the chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, had been violating the model code of conduct in all her public meetings by making policy announcements “She has done this many times before by-elections after the new regime came to power. We have informed the state election commission and got all such violations noted,” Deb said.
