Ragged student commits suicide on second attempt

Adak, brutally ragged a month ago in Howrah based Calcutta Institute of Pharmaceutical & Allied Health Science (CIPAHS), killed himself Friday morning in his second attempt.

On 5 September, the day he was ragged allegedly in his campus, Adak tried to commit suicide by consuming poison. He had failed in his first attempt.

On Friday morning he hung himself from a wooden beam in the cowshed of his house at Alinan village in East Midnapore district about 150 kms south west of Kolkata.

A first year student of B Pharma, Adak was bullied, harassed and slashed on his hand with a blade. But the worst punishment came in the form of air being injected from an empty syringe allegedly by some senior students of the institution. Writhing in intense pain Adak returned to home and consumed poison.

“This is a very sad incident. I wonder why this boy took such an extreme step. After the incidence was reported we did a preliminary enquiry. The college authorities denied the incident but we found that it was true,” said higher education minister Sudarshan Roy Choudhury.

“Apparently the youth was looking very depressed,” said Bastab Baidya, superintendent of police of East Midnapore district on Friday.

However, in September Kolkata-based Jadavpur University handed out a landmark punishment to five students of engineering and science faculties for ragging juniors.

The punishment included a rider that they would be banned from attending any higher education institution in India for a year.
