A school teacher from Balurghat in South Dinajpur was beaten up and handed over to the police on Sunday morning for allegedly attempting rape on a Class 9 student at his residence.
The accused has been identified as Tapan Sarkar, a teacher of mathematics of Jakirpur Higher Secondary School in Balurghat. After treating the teacher at a local public hospital, the police have arrested him.
“According to the complaint of the victim, the accused tried to rape her and a case in this regard has been filed and the teacher arrested,” said Manoj Chakraborty, officer-in-charge of Balurghat Police Station.
A well-known teacher in his locality, Sarkar ran a private tuition centre at his residence where besides his school students, several others flocked to take special classes. According to the complaint, on Wednesday, after completing his tuition, the accused asked students to leave his residence, barring the victim.
“At that time, his wife and children were not present and he told others that he would give the victim extra classes,” the police said.
When the girl returned from the coaching centre, she was completely mum and did not disclose anything to her parents. On Sunday morning, when her parents asked her to go to the coaching centre, she refused to do so.

{{/usCountry}}“On seeing her unusual behaviour, her parents asked her what was the matter and the girl burst into tears and related the incident,” said the cop. The parents then went to the teacher’s house and after the news spread, locals and other guardians of students, who went to the coaching centre, also reached the spot.
