Six persons including a policeman were injured when villagers clashed with police on Sunday at Purushottampur in West Bengal's Burdwan district while protesting against the expansion works of the Indian Iron and Steel Company (IISCO).
Seventy people were arrested in connection with the incident, the police said.
As soon as the land filling work of the company began on Sunday morning, some of the villagers whose land would be taken away due to the project tried to stop the bulldozers, demanding permanent employment in the company, they said.
When the police intervened, the villagers resorted to violence injuring one policeman. Five villagers were also injured.
The villagers had agitated earlier too on the same demand that resulted in the suspension of the expansion work for the last three days.
On Saturday, the Asansol sub-divisional officer held a meeting with the villagers and had informed them that temporary employment opportunities would be considered, but ruled out permanent employment possibilities.
