TMC brings city traffic to a grinding halt

The city traffic came to a grinding halt for an hour as the Trinamool Congress-led opposition camp resorted to “road blockade” from 11 am to 12 pm in protest against Sunday’s political violence at Nandigram.

The city traffic came to a grinding halt for an hour on Monday as the Trinamool Congress-led opposition camp resorted to “road blockade” from 11 am to 12 pm in protest against Sunday’s political violence at Nandigram that left two dead and five seriously injured by bullet shots.

The TMC supporters and opposition party workers squatted on different arterial roads and major crossings of the city throwing the traffic on the streets out of gear.

This created massive traffic snarls almost at the every important road crossings. The TMC supporters even stopped the movements of local trains to and from Sealdah and Howrah stations—the two major entry and exit points of trains in the the city.

Trinamool supporters made human chains at important crossings like Shyambazar five-point, Park Circus seven-point, Central Avenue, Hazra intersection, Gariahat and several other places in the city.

The Trinamool supporters and party workers were seen holding placards and shouting slogans in protest against the renewed violence at Nandigram on Sunday. And they claimed that it was the CPI(M) that was responsible for the continuing volatile situation in Nandigram.

When contacted, a senior traffic cop of the city said: "the traffic was thrown out of gear at noon. But now the sitaution is returning to normalcy. We expect things to be absolutely normal in another hour."

Meanwhile, the airport was not affecetd and flights operated on schedule on Monday.
