In an unprecedented move West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) is finalizing a plan whereby a student will get a chance to improve marks even after the publication of Higher Secondary examination by reappearing for any two papers once again.
“Called Grade Improvement Program (GIP) it has never been tried by any education board in India. However, it is popular in the West,” claimed Onkar Sadhan Adhikari, president of WBCHSE.
The proposal to introduce GIP 2010 was discussed in the examination committee meeting of WBCHSE on 7 October.
Currently modalities of GIP are under finalisation. The issues are who would be eligible to apply for GIP.
WBCHSE has decided to limit the number of subjects to two.
The council is working towards introducing GIP for those students who would appear for their Higher Secondary (+2) examination in 2010.
It would enable students to appear in any two papers of their choice in 2011 higher secondary examination as regular candidates and improve their grades. They would be issued fresh marksheets that won’t mention that grades have been improved through this mechanism.
However, there is a downside as well. Once a student decides to take GIP, he has to accept the marks even if it is less than what he scored in the earlier examination.

{{/usCountry}}“The process may be helpful for students who are planning to take various competitive exams like IIT-JEE and WBJEE which stipulate certain threshold marks in certain subjects. Improving their marks in higher secondary would also help them to improve their prospects,” explained Adhikari.
