Aridiculous video of ignorant Indians commenting on “India’s chances of winning the Football World Cup” is creating waves on social media, but the country’s relationship with the game is a serious matter, feels India football captain Sunil Chhetri.
The 29-year-old, who is one of the experts in the World Cup commentary panel, says, “I feel sad that India hasn’t been able to make it yet, but we can’t get emotional and crib about it. As a nation, we should first think about how we can win in Asia and then about making it to the bigger stages. If we do well in Asia, the top teams automatically qualify for the World Cup.”
So, how soon does he think that can be achieved? “The word ‘soon’ depends on how we all react. The players, coaches and government, all need to take it further. When that starts happening, I think we Indians can do much better since we’re high on talent and interest.”And that skill, he believes, goes for fields other than football too.
A “big fan” of actors Konkona Sen, Irrfan “who is really good” and Ranbir Kapoor, Chhetri is all for Bollywood as long as he doesn’t turn a subject for it. “A biopic on me would be a disaster! Probably one on Baichung (Bhutia, former footballer) yes ... that will be funny too but in the right way!” he says.
