I was invited to the New Balance store to try the Abzorb 2000 and the newer Abzorb 2010, and honestly, the 2010 barely got a chance. The Abzorb 2000 sitting on the shelf had already caught my eye. I tried every colour before settling on the black and silver, which felt like the obvious choice. The deep black mesh, silver detailing and those very visible cushioning pods give it a distinctly early 2000s tech runner look, but without making it feel like a costume from the past.
It is also not a lightweight little sneaker. The build feels substantial from the moment you pick it up, which makes sense given the full-length Abzorb sole unit and segmented cushioning system. New Balance lists the shoe at 419.2 grams. I took my pair to Coorg for a monsoon getaway. I have barely taken them off since.

Unlike traditional New Balance silhouettes, the Abzorb 2000 leans heavily into a bold, Y2K-inspired futuristic look with its chunky profile and exposed sole pods.
During my trip, the black and silver colourway proved to be a smart choice: the dark base masked scuffs and dirt on long travel days, while the metallic accents popped unexpectedly well, both in outdoor sunlight and under dim hotel lighting. Beneath the retro-futuristic mesh upper, the technical combination of full-length Abzorb cushioning, Abzorb SBS pods, and the midfoot Stability Web shank provided noticeable structure underfoot, though the open mesh design naturally favours breathability over waterproofing.
What makes the Abzorb 2000’s design work so well is restraint. The silver accents and iconic 'N' branding give the shoe a futuristic silhouette without cluttering it, while the grounded black base keeps it wearable.
What surprised me most was its unexpected versatility. I tested these sneakers across a wide range of aesthetics. From structured barrel jeans and straight-fit denim to a tailored cotton skirt co-ord, and even mini dresses and casual shorts. Despite its aggressive, sporty DNA, the dark colourway acts as an anchor, allowing it to contrast smoothly with softer, tailored pieces rather than clashing.

How comfortable is the Abzorb 2000 for all-day wear?
This is where the Abzorb 2000 completely won me over.
I have flat feet, so footwear tends to reveal its problems very quickly. A shoe can look fantastic and still have my feet protesting within a few hours. The Abzorb 2000 did not do that.
Testing the underfoot tech: A daily user breakdown
Abzorb foam core: The full-length cushioning gives the shoe a substantial feel underfoot and takes the edge off hard surfaces. New Balance combines the Abzorb cushioning with Abzorb SBS pods across the sole rather than relying on a single slab of foam.
Abzorb SBS pods: These are the most noticeable part of the shoe visually, but they are not just there for show. Underfoot, the cushioning feels firm enough to keep you stable while still giving your feet plenty of support.
Support: My real test came on travel day. I left home at 6 am, took a flight from Bhopal to Bengaluru, spent four hours at the airport, flew to Mangaluru and then took a taxi to Virajpet in Coorg. We reached around 9 pm. That was a very long day, involving plenty of airport walking and sitting, and my feet did not hurt or feel uncomfortable at any point. For me, that is a serious win!
Upper and airflow: The mesh upper keeps the shoe reasonably comfortable in warm weather, while the structured construction provides a secure fit. The fit feels more streamlined than some of the roomier New Balance styles, so people with broader feet should try them on before ordering. And then came Coorg.
The monsoon gave these shoes plenty to deal with. There was drizzle, puddles, and plenty of splashing around, yet my socks never got wet. The shoes themselves stayed surprisingly dry too. I would not call them waterproof, but they handled the wet conditions far better than I expected from a lifestyle sneaker. Clearly these were designed for more than just pairing with cute outfits!

Right out of the box, the Abzorb 2000 required zero break-in period—no heel friction, stiff arches, or hot spots on day one. This is a massive plus if you plan to wear them straight out of the box for a trip.
Sizing Advice: Stick to your true New Balance size.
Fit Profile: The forefoot and upper feature a slightly more streamlined silhouette compared to wider retro models like the 990 or 1906R. Wide-footed runners or walkers should ideally try them on in-store or consider sizing up half a step for extra toe-box clearance.
Durability: Initial Testing & Foam Longevity
After putting these through airport sprints, long transit days, wet monsoon paths, and daily pavement pounding, they show impressive wear resistance:
Upper Maintenance: The black mesh resists scuffing and hides trail grime on surfaces effortlessly.
Cushioning Retention: The Abzorb midsole and heel pods haven't developed that dead, compressed feeling common in softer EVA midsoles after repeated heavy days.
Note on Long-Term Wear: While early performance across varied terrain is promising, I will update this review after 6+ months of continued wear to evaluate long-term outsole rubber degradation.
Should you buy the New Balance Abzorb 2000?
I went into this thinking I had found a good-looking travel sneaker. I came out of Coorg wondering if I had found my new favourite everyday pair.
The Abzorb 2000 works particularly well for people who like statement sneakers, want proper cushioning for long days and enjoy the Y2K tech runner look. It is also a very good option for travel because the black and silver colourway is easy to style and forgiving when you are constantly on the move.
If you prefer very lightweight, minimal sneakers or roomy retro runners, this may not be the one for you. For me, the comfort is the real story. I never expected to say this after years of wearing the ASICS GEL series, but the New Balance Abzorb 2000 has given them some serious competition.
