Forget complicated detox routines. Gut health nutritionist Paridhi says eating dinner early could be one simple habit to support better digestion.

For people struggling with acidity, bloating, heaviness or digestive discomfort, making changes to their diet can often feel overwhelming. While supplements, detox drinks and restrictive diets are frequently promoted as solutions, gut health nutritionist Paridhi says one simple habit may be worth prioritising: eating dinner earlier.

“If you have the capacity for only one habit change right now, forget the supplements, forget the detox waters, do this. Just start having early dinners,” says Paridhi in her August 12 Instagram post. (Also read: Want to eat healthy without giving up taste? Why late dinners may affect digestion

“Now the most common symptom I see with people who have digestive issues is morning acidity. See, our gut motility and acid production naturally slows down by the time it’s evening,” Paridhi explains.

“So if we’re eating late and lying down or sleeping soon after, our stomach acid, which is supposed to break the food down, does not have enough time to do its job,” she adds.

Paridhi recommends leaving enough time between dinner and bedtime rather than eating immediately before sleeping.“So remember, all you need to do is have dinner three to four hours before you sleep and do not lie down before your bedtime. That’s all. Try it for two weeks and you will see a change,” she says.

In a separate Instagram post shared by The Gut Perspective, the nutritionist further highlighted early dinner as a simple routine change that may help people experiencing digestive discomfort.

“If you take away ONE thing from me, let it be this: eat dinner early. This single routine edit can help with acidity and reflux, regular bloating, heaviness after eating, irregular bowel movements and painful/uncomfortable bowel movements,” the post stated.

What happens when you eat late at night?

According to the post, one reason timing may matter is the migrating motor complex (MMC), a pattern of movement in the digestive tract that occurs between meals when the digestive system is relatively empty.

“Your gut has a self-cleaning cycle (called the migrating motor complex) that only activates when your stomach is empty. Eat late, sleep soon after, and this cleaning crew never gets its shift, leading to bloating, gas, and sluggish digestion over time,” she explained.

The post also pointed to the natural changes that occur in digestion during the evening. “On top of that, your acid production and gut motility naturally slow down at night. So a heavy 10 pm dinner just sits in a stomach that’s winding down, and that’s your late-night acidity and reflux, explained,” Paridhi added.

Ways to make dinner timing easier

For those looking to bring their dinner forward, the nutritionist suggests making small and practical changes rather than completely overhauling their routine. “The fix isn’t complicated,” the post said, suggesting:

  • Finish dinner 3 hours before bed
  • Try to eat before 8 pm where possible
  • Let your gut get its overnight repair window
