Scott Capurro doesn’t like to mince words. The American stand-up comic, known for over-the-top racist jokes and remarks on homosexuals (he is a proud member of the community himself), couldn’t care less about being tagged as an irreverent performer. Needless to say, that is what makes him a one-of-a-kind comic. He will be visiting Mumbai this weekend to perform at a festival, Best In Stand-Up Comedy.

We catch up with him on the eve of his show.

What topics will you touch upon during your performance?
I will be focussing on other comics’ jokes or people’s fears. I work without restrictions. So strap in, it’s going to get bumpy.

Have you ever offended anyone with your style of comedy? Tell us about the most scathing reactions you have received.
Last year, my brother told me that I was vulgar and should be disowned by my family. Recently, in Norway, my husband told me that I’d “gone too far” while flirting with an audience member. He had to take a walk and calm down. A Brit newspaper stated that I was evil and should be forced to leave the country, but the English take everything, except their teeth, so seriously.

Do you ever censor a joke?
No, but I would tell a rape joke about a censor.

Who are your inspirations in comedy?
Richard Pryor (late American stand-up comedian and actor) and my mother.

Scott Capurro will perform on November 15, 16 and 22, at Blue Frog, Lower Parel, from 8.30 pm onwards.
