On a wing and a player!

There are kids that fly toy planes. There are pilots that employ wings to real planes. And then there is a good little thing in between that is taking the air to blur the two.

There are kids that fly toy planes. There are pilots that employ wings to real planes. And then there is a good little thing in between that is taking the air to blur the two. Welcome to the world of aero-modelling. Approved by Aero Modelers Association of India, we met the city’s first organised group of aero- modelors just across the Aravalli Range.

Every Sunday, between 7 and 11 in the morning, a group of 25 enthusiasts from the Capital get together at Bhondsi village on the Guragon-Sohna road.

This is to fly remote-controlled helicopters, planes and jets, ranging between four and eight feet in size, and costing between `35,000 and `2.5 lakh. These giant instruments, that run on petrol or kerosene, are assembled by the group under the guidance of a former Air Force officer, who is himself a part of this gang, and proficient in electronics and integrated circuitry.

On what is strictly a hobby and not a commercial venture, an owner of three jets and five planes of this kind, dentist and aero-modelling addict Ankur Aggarwal tells us, “You know, all of us feel like running away from the everyday, mundane grind. I use
to laze around during Sundays, but now I have this amazing hobby to turn to. It is a passion. I feel motivated like never before on being a part of it. The best thing is that we friends are doing it together. There is excellent camaraderie in our group.”

You, too, can turn into an air aficionado and become a part of this troop as it welcomes everyone.
