As many as 29 police officers, including five Indian Police Service (IPS) and 24 Provincial Police Services (PPS), were suspended by the Uttar Pradesh government in the last four years, an RTI query has revealed.
The information sought by Lucknow based activist Nutan Thakur states that none among these suspended cops has been found guilty till now.
“As per the law, the officers can be suspended only when serious departmental action is contemplated against them but the RTI information seems to reinforce the point that in UP, senior police officers are suspended on the whims and fancies of the powerful politicians,” Thakur said.
These suspensions were done between January 1, 2009 and February 13, 2013, it says. Suspended IPS officers include Ajay Kumar Mishra (May 24, 2009), the then SSP Etawah, OP Sagar (26 June 26, 2012) SP Pratapgarh, DK Rai (June 14, 2011), SP Kheri, JN Singh (April 26, 2011), deputy inspector general (DIG) Meerut and SP Jalaun RP Chaturvedi (December 1, 2012).
Of the five IPS officers, guilt against two could not be proved. The reply says that JN Singh was reinstated within two months and no formal chargesheet was filed against him. Ajay Mishra, however, remained suspended for about 15 months. The departmental inquiry gave him a clean chit. For the rest, investigations are still on.

{{/usCountry}}Among suspended PPS officers, eight are additional SPs and 16 deputy SPs. In 10 cases, the officers were ultimately given a clean chit. Those not found guilty include additional SPs Kushhar, KK Asthana, Ashok Kumar Verma and BN Tiwari and deputy SPs Zalim Singh, Ashok Kumar Singh, Ram Shankar Dwivedi, Santosh Kumar Singh and Mukul Dwivedi.
