Civil aviation minister and Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh has written to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav for land to upgrade airport facilities in Agra, Meerut and Jhansi.
While Agra and Meerut are in western UP, an RLD stronghold, Jhansi is in Bundelkhand region in the southwest part.
In three letters to the CM in the last two weeks, Singh has demanded his "personal intervention" to consider the interests of the state's people.
Singh has demanded 55.29 acres adjacent to Agra airport, 433 acres for upgrading Meerut airstrip and transfer of Jhansi airport back to the Airports Authority of India.
Singh said Agra airport belonged to the Indian Air Force and the AAI had not been able to expand a civil enclave due to "land constraints and IAF's reluctance to part with land".
For Meerut airstrip, he said the AAI had assessed that it could be upgraded for civil schedule operations.
In the letter on Jhansi airport, Singh said the state had got it for maintenance in 1986, but handed it over to the army in 1990 without the concurrence of the AAI. He said considering tourism potential, Jhansi airport could be developed for civil operations.
