Four masked youths barged into a businessman’s house in the busy Qaiserbagh locality on Friday afternoon and robbed cash and valuables worth Rs. 10 lakh after holding his wife and daughters hostage. The robbers also assaulted the businessman’s wife and locked his family members inside a room before fleeing from the house.

The incident occurred when businessman Mohd Irfan’s wife Shabana and her two daughters Farheen, 13 and Afreen, 6, were in the house along with their tutor Munni around 3.30 pm. The family stays on the first floor of a two storey building in crowded Maqboolganj locality while tenants stay on the ground floor. Irfan runs a garment’s shop in Nixon market on Latouche Road.

Shabana told police that she was sitting with her daughters and their tutor, when the robbers barged into the house apparently through an open window. She said all the men were holding firearms and had covered their faces with scarves. “They held all of us captive on gunpoint and locked us in a room. One of them even hit me when I tried to show resistance and they tied our hands and taped our mouth to prevent us from raising an alarm,” she said.

RB Sahu, Inspector of Qaiserbagh police station, said the youths’ modus operandi suggested that they were familiar with the family, as they were aware about the presence of valuables and cash in the bedroom locker. Also they barged into the house as soon as Irfan left for the shop after having lunch.

The inspector said a team of finger print experts, forensic and dog squad was called at the crime scene. “We have got some clues from there on the basis of which the police are further investigating the matter,” he said.
