Police had to resort to a mild cane-charge while removing encroachments in Alambagh to pave way for the construction of pillars by Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC).The ant-encroachment drive started at 12.30 pm. Initially, the squatters and stall owners were given time to remove their stuff, but when they refused, the police resorted to a mild lathi-charge. In all, 350 encroachments were removed.
Sujit Sonkar, a vendor attacked the cops when his stall was removed. He was detained for a few hours. Other vendors including one Ravi Sonkar, Chandan and Neetu Sonkar threatened self-immolation, if their stalls were removed. However, they were chased away by the police after the cane-charge.

The LMC swung into action following chief secretary Alok Ranjan’s directive to ensure completion of Lucknow Metro rail project on time. The chief secretary had also issued directives to clean the area of encroachments and ensure proper traffic flow before the construction of pillars for Lucknow metro begins.
Meanwhile, municipal commissioner Udairaj Singh ordered the zonal officer to ensure that these encroachments don’t come back again.
