“Why doesn’t Rahul get angry on the issues of the common man,” said Mayawati, referring to Gandhi’s recent remark that the state of affairs in UP made him angry. The Congress reacted strongly against Mayawati’s remarks. The party charged her with “misusing maximum funds” provided by the Centre in constructing parks and erecting statues, including those of her own.

“There is no need to advise Rahul Gandhi. Mayawati is always hungry of funds despite receiving maximum funds from the Centre. It is a state where maximum funds have been misused,” Congress spokesman Rashid Alvi said in New Delhi.

In Lucknow, state Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi issued a press statement, saying Mayawati’s comments on Gandhi were an act of frustration and reflected that her party was suffering from Rahul phobia.

Terming Gandhi’s tours to east UP villages a gimmick, Mayawati, meanwhile, alleged he was distorting facts.

During a visit to villages in Chandauli district on November 2, Gandhi told the villagers that there was no development in UP. “Don’t you people get angry? You all sit very quietly. I get angry when I come here,” Gandhi had said.

“As an MP from the state he should exert pressure on the Union government for releasing funds for the welfare works and projects for UP,” said Mayawati.

She said, “The Congress ruled UP for 38 years. Instead of launching development projects, the feudal elements committed atrocities on the poor and minorities.”
