The meeting with Gadkari, held just before the UP BJP chief Surya Pratap Shahi, forms his ‘Mission UP: 2012’ team, assumes significance as Gadkari is expected to get a sense of the new UP BJP team, which would be tasked with strategising the saffron brigade’s election campaign in the state.

Bury differences, put up a united show to oust the BSP government in UP, was Gadkari’s advice to the 150 member BJP delegation, which comprised all big wigs of the party’s state unit.

Ever since he took over as the party chief in December, this is Gadkari’s second meeting with a BJP delegation from UP, a clear indication that the party chief is showing “keen interest” in UP, where the party has slumped even behind the Congress and is ranked fourth.

“However, since Shahi took charge, there is some activity. The Dumariyaganj by-election, where BJP came second after BSP with the Congress candidate losing his deposit, is a positive sign,” a party leader, present at the Gadkari-meeting said. By giving representation to as many as 42 members from UP in his national team (some more UP BJP faces could be inducted soon), the national BJP chief has hinted that UP is on his priority list.

A senior leader said, “The plan is to remain visible and be seen as fighting for the cause of the aam aadmi.”
