Noor Baksh had been part of the group that attacked Chhota Rajan in Bangkok in 2000.

The shootout, which left four policemen injured, took place in Alambagh between Baksh and a joint team of the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) and the Lucknow Crime Branch.

STF Inspector Avinash Mishra said they received information that the gangster was planning an escape. Baksh was using a mobile phone in jail that was being tapped by the STF.

Mishra said an STF team would follow Baksh when he attended his case hearing in Lucknow. On Wednesday, too, the STF followed the vehicle taking Baksh to court. Four armed constables were escorting him.

Mishra said that as the vehicle passed the Jail Road crossing, armed men on two motorcycles intercepted it and started hurling crude bombs. As the vehicle was stopped, Baksh stepped out and took a .9mm pistol from his associates. The exchange of fire started after the STF and Crime Branch team arrived.
