“Voting isn’t only a right of citizens. It is also a civic duty of all above 18 years of age and thus one must cast his/her vote as a responsible citizen,” said SK Agarwal, state election commissioner during the National Voters’ Day programme at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan.

To ensure there is no duplication of names on the voters’ list, the state election commission has also started an initiative in 40 districts wherein the voters’ list of the district is being tallied with that of the central election commission. The names that are not common in the two lists would be verified and door-to-door survey would be done to check the details of voters, said Agarwal.

“UP has 14.4 crore voters. 16 lakh new registrations were done last year and 17 lakh voters were removed from the list,” said RK Pandey, additional chief electoral officer.

Governor Ram Naik felicitated officials, students and civil society members for their contributions in holding fair elections. Ministhy S Nair, special secretary home was felicitated for carrying out her duties efficiently as district election officer in Barabanki during polls.

The governor said, “Special emphasis should be laid on ensuring that gover nment employees on poll duty be allowed to cast their votes through postal ballot.”
