There has been a phenomenal increase in number of applications for MA and Post Graduate diploma courses in yoga at Lucknow University (LU) this year.

Earlier, LU could not receive more than 70-80 applications for MA in yoga course. However, the number of applications this year has swelled upto 200.

In PG diploma course too, the number of applications has increased to 350 against 80-100 applications the university received in past. The rise in number of applications has been beyond the expectation of university’s yoga teachers. They say the International Yoga Day celebrations on June 21 last has helped in giving a new lease of life to the yoga courses.

“The buzz created by International Yoga Day resulted in manifold increase in number of applicants. As there is now demand for yoga teachers everywhere, students feel it is more profitable than pursuing any other coruse,” said Satyendra Mishra, a yoga teacher at LU.

Mishra said initiatives like International Yoga Day have brought more focus on yoga at the global level. On the other hand, due to lifestyle stress, more people are taking to yoga and the demand for trained yoga teachers is set to increase, he added.
