India leads in plastic surgery

Though the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery's global survey ranks India as fourth in the list of 25 courtries but experts who had gathered at the national update on plastic surgery at Lucknow say India tops the chart.

India ranks first in terms of the number of plastic surgery conducted every year in any other country.

Though the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery's (ISAPS's) global survey ranks India as fourth in the list of 25 courtries but experts who had gathered at the national update on plastic surgery at Lucknow say India tops the chart.

"A large number of surgeries are not reported in India thus the ISAPS survey rankings can not be said accurate. In fact India ranks first if number of surgeries are to be considered," said Dr Mukul Khade, president of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India who came from Mumbai.

As per the survey Indian surgeons performed 6,83,160 surgical procedures in 2009 and 2,11,540 non surgical procedures which is 5.2 per cent of overall procedures performed in 25 countries included in the survey.

Under the surgical procedures category, Liposuction tops with total of 1,607,979 people undergoing the procedure, followed by Breast Augmentation (1,454,317).

Dr Milind Wagh also of Mumbai said that India has gained importance as a destination for planned surgeries, specially plastic and orthopaedic for two reasons.

Both the doctors are in Lucknow to conduct live operative workshop in the departmnt of Plastic Surgery at the CSM Medical University.

Apart from the operative workshop the annual conference of the UP chapter of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India will also be held. Head of the department Prof AK Singh said surgreis will be performed by the experts to explain new techniques to the particiating surgeons.
