New Year ruckus lands 300 youth in jail

A senior top official says, the youths are detained for their wild behaviour at around mid night on the New Year's eve.

As many as 300 youths were detained for creating ruckus on the eve of New Year, police said in Kanpur on Tuesday.

The youths were detained for their wild behaviour at around mid night, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Anand Swaroop said, adding they spent their first morning of the new year in police custody.

The youths were set free after a warning was issued to their wardens, he said. The police had made elaborate arrangements to control the mob on the eve of New Year, police pickets were deployed at important places, he said.

Moreover, around 100 drivers were also detained and challaned on account of drunken driving. They were also released after issuing stern warnings, the SSP added.

The checking of the vehicles will continue on Tuesday also and those driving under the influence of liquor will not be spared, he said.
