Doctors at government hospitals often find themselves handling an emergency situation after the outbreak of epidemics during or after any natural calamity. Now they would be well equipped to do so with disaster management skills.
The doctors would be taught how to save the disaster victims during the rescue work. “It was observed in US that after 9/11 incident, a large number of disaster victims died, as they were rescued in a hurried manner.
During an emergency it is imperative to know how the body parts are to be handled during rescue work,” said senior health department officials.
“Suppose the patient sustains head injuries. The doctors and the para medical staff engaged in rescue work must know how to lift the patient and safely transport to hospital. In hospital, the heavy instruments and other objects must be placed accordingly, so that during earthquakes these objects don’t fall upon patients or doctors,” said senior health department officials.
Keeping this need in mind, government doctors across the state would be trained for the role of disaster managers, dealing in various types of disasters, epidemic, disaster and health care. The training would be under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and held in Lucknow in the second week of November. Senior health department officials have sought the list of three-doctors each from every district in the state.

{{/usCountry}}Sources in health department told HT, “The role and responsibilities of doctors become very important following natural calamities. The doctors would be trained how to manage large number of patients in the hospital.”
They added, “Most of the government hospitals in the state are not earthquake proof. Therefore it has become the need of the hour to train doctors so they could identify the places on hospital premises to keep the patients safe.”
The government officials further informed that due to large number of casualties during natural disasters, chances are high for the outbreak of epidemics. Besides, managing dead bodies to stop the spread of infections is also necessary.
CMO (family welfare) Dr Harish Chandra told, “The objective behind training doctors is to ensure proper plans in hospitals. The trained doctors would be a vital tool for the department during such incidents.”
