Arunima ‘Sonu’ Sinha, the sportswoman who lost her left leg after she was thrown out of a running train last week, was shifted on Monday to New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for better treatment by an air ambulance.
The decision to shift Sonu was taken after union sports minister Ajay Maken met the athlete at the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU) and offered her free treatment in New Delhi.
The 25-year-old national-level volleyball player, who was earlier undergoing treatment at a Bareilly district hospital, was shifted to CSMMU on Sunday after doctors detected an infection in her amputated leg. She underwent an operation on Sunday.
“Doctors told me there was no need to shift her elsewhere but I have offered all the help and treatment wherever her family wants,” Maken said.
Though doctors succeeded in controlling the infection, they felt AIIMS, was better equipped to deal with the case. Political parties, meanwhile, are leaving no stone unturned to score some brownie points.
While state sports minister Ayodhya Prasad Pal visited Sonu and offered her a job in the sports department, Maken offered her a job in the railways.
