Uttar pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati said on Tuesday that the Opposition — mainly the BJP, which led the central government at the time — had falsely implicated her in the Taj Heritage Corridor (THC) case to malign her image.

"All the charges against me were false and fabricated and were levelled to defame me," Mayawati said. “The BJP made the THC case a main issue against me in all the assembly elections held in any state after 2003 and in the 2004 Lok Sabha election," she said, adding that the BJP had conspired and misguided innocent people against her by using the THC case as a weapon.

The BJP-led NDA government at the centre took judicial help to lodge an FIR and get her and her relatives' houses raided, she said. “But since the people were aware of the BJP's conspiracy, the BSP’s support base had only gone up," she said, adding that people from all sections of society, including the upper castes, extended their full support to the BSP in the recently concluded assembly elections.

And senior BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra, on his part, said that the CBI lodged two FIRs against Mayawati, while only one was lodged against all the other accused in the case. The SC never asked the CBI to lodge a case for possessing assets disproportionate to Mayawati’s known sources of income, he said.
