Triple talaq a curse on society, says Swami Prasad Maurya

The Centre and the state government are making efforts to put an end to the practice of triple talaq, says Maurya.

UP labour minister Swami Prasad Maurya on Monday said triple talaq was a curse on the society and the government would ensure justice for Muslim women.

Talking to media persons on the sidelines of the inauguration of medical service mobile van for cows, Maurya said the Centre and the state government were making efforts to put an end to the practice of triple talaq.

He said the Yogi Adityanath government was committed to protecting cows and said cow slaughter had been checked across the state.

Maurya also visited Garhwa Ashram and sought blessings from Swami Sharnanand. He took a round of the ashram and sought information about the cows there. The minister said he was fortunate that he got the blessings of saints at the ashram.

Maurya has kicked up a controversy last week when he said triple talaq was being misused by men to “satisfy their lust”.

The minister’s comments had drawn flak from several quarters, including Muslim leaders who demanded an unconditional apology from him.

“These ‘talaq’ have no basis. If someone keeps changing his wives and forces his own wife and children to beg on streets only for satisfying his lust... no one will call this right,” he had said.
